EU Allocates €10 Billion for Seven AI "Gigafactories" to Close Supercomputing Gap

The European Commission, alongside participating member states, has launched a €10 billion public funding drive to establish up to seven high-capacity AI "Gigafactories" across the continent. Operating under the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU), the initiative seeks to leverage public backing to unlock an additional €20 billion in private investments. Designed to bridge the computing capacity gap with the United States and China, each Gigafactory will house tens of thousands of advanced AI processors.These facilities will serve European startups, researchers, and industrial enterprises by offering raw compute power for training, inference, and fine-tuning frontier AI models containing trillions of parameters while ensuring compliance with EU safety, data privacy, and ethical standards.
