DoorDash Reaches Record $131.5 Million Settlement with New York City Over Delivery Worker Pay

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, alongside the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) and Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su, announced a historic $131.5 million enforcement settlement with food delivery giant DoorDash on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.City officials described the agreement as the largest worker enforcement settlement in New York City history and the largest financial settlement involving food delivery workers secured by any U.S. municipality. Under the terms of the settlement, DoorDash will distribute over $115 million directly to more than 260,000 delivery workers who were underpaid, went unpaid, or received delayed compensation. The remaining $16.7 million will be paid to New York City in civil penalties and administrative costs.The city's investigation into DoorDash's practices revealed systemic failures to comply with New York City’s landmark delivery worker pay regulations. The primary issue involved DoorDash's calculation of compensable "on-call time" (the period delivery workers remain logged into the app and available to receive delivery orders between trips) as well as improper compensation for "batched" multi-stop deliveries.City investigators found that DoorDash excluded multiple categories of trip and on-call time, resulting in significant wage shortfalls under NYC's minimum pay rate rules (currently set at $22.13 per hour, excluding tips). Additionally, thousands of workers experienced delayed earnings or total non-payment for completed deliveries, violating city mandates that require app workers to be paid at least once per week.DoorDash acknowledged operational errors following the announcement, issuing a public statement that read: "Simply put, we screwed up." While maintaining that the pay calculation disputes stemmed from complex technical bugs (such as trips crossing city lines or cancelled deliveries) DoorDash agreed to adopt the city’s compensable time calculation model going forward. The settlement mandates three years of enhanced municipal oversight, requiring DoorDash to implement major software updates, submit to an independent internal compliance monitor, and preserve detailed payment transparency data. Eligible workers are expected to receive automatic payments ranging from a minimum of $10 to several thousand dollars depending on the severity of their missing earnings.
